It’s Ash Wednesday and your forehead needs a cross

The photo shows a banner created by the youth group at Trinity UMC to celebrate Rockbridge Area Relief Organization’s (RARA) move to its new location in Lexington.

The banner was created in the fall and is still on display in the former rescue squad building.

Nancy took this photo while working at RARA.

It’s Ash Wednesday

If you’re reading this on Wednesday, Feb. 22, it’s Ash Wednesday.

A reminder that we’ll meet for worship at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The service will include the imposition of ashes upon your forehead

as a sign, as we say, “that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” In other words, we begin the season of Lent in the church by remembering our mortality and our fundamental need to be in a right relationship to eternal God.

Some more liberal churches use chocolate to make the cross…no, that’s wrong. Sorry.

Jim Grimmer

I stopped by Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital yesterday to see former Trinity UMC pastor Jim Grimmer.

Jim has been suffering with some physical weakness and other ailments. He was in typical good spirits, though. And his eyes seemed bright.

He was reading the comics when I came in. Knowing his sense of humor, I imagine that’s Jim’s favorite part of the newspaper.

Keep Jim and Anne in your prayers.

By the way, I’m not sure who’s responsible for this but on the wall of the hospital elevator is the official Body Mass Index (BMI) chart that allows you to calculate if you’re the proper weight, overweight or obese.

As a matter of fact, you have just enough time between the lobby and the second floor to discover just what a slob you are.

Do you think this is the hospital’s way of getting you to take the stairs?

P.S.–Taking the stairs everywhere you can could be one of your Lenten disciplines.

Confirmation

Six youth are signed up to begin confirmation classes this Sunday. Their studies, and other activities, will lead to the opportunity on Palm Sunday, April 1, for each of them to make their profession of faith.

The youth are Taylor Lovell, Emma Spencer, Addie Jay Beacham, Abby Hamilton, Meryn Williams and Trey Williams.

Please keep these young persons in your prayers.

Confirmation this year will include an overnight retreat with other youth on the Staunton District of the United Methodist Church on March 30-31.

The event will be held at our district retreat and camping center, Camp Overlook at Keezletown (I love that name), near Harrisonburg.

The Harrisonburg and Winchester districts share the upkeep of the camp with the Staunton District.
